The Executive Reset: Why Intentionality is the Ultimate Competitive Advantage in 2026

The first week of January frequently seems like a collision between two opposing forces: the pressure to hit the ground running with aggressive KPIs, alongside the subtle internal realization that “business as usual” is no longer sustainable.

Executive-level women sometimes find that the standard “New Year’s Resolution” framework is insufficient. Resolutions are frequently reactive; they focus on fixing flaws. What high-level leadership requires instead is a Strategic Reset. This is the process of moving from reactive urgency to intentional positioning.

If you want to shape the year rather than let the year shape you, here are the four pillars of a successful executive reset, backed by leadership research.

1. Lead From Identity, Not Just Activity

Most leaders focus on what they need to do to achieve results. However, research by INSEAD professor Herminia Ibarra on “Identity Transition” suggests that leadership growth requires a shift from “outsight” to “insight.”

Ibarra’s research shows that we change from the outside in by acting like the leader we want to become before we necessarily feel like them. Instead of letting January’s calendar dictate your behavior, ask: “How would the person holding my next-level role handle this decision?” When you lead from identity, you stop reacting to the “fire of the day” and start making decisions based on the legacy you are building.

2. Audit Energy, Not Just Your Calendar

The traditional executive obsession with “time management” is a diminishing return. Research published in The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz argues that energy, not time, is the fundamental currency of high performance.

Executive women often manage their calendars with meticulous accuracy but neglect their cognitive and emotional bandwidth. A strategic reset requires an “Energy Audit.” Look at your commitments for Q1. Which meetings, projects, or relationships yield a high ROI on your energy, and which are purely “leakage”? Confident leaders protect their capacity because they know that their most valuable asset isn’t their hours, it’s their clarity of thought.

3. Shift from Proving to Positioning

One common trap in mid-to-senior leadership is the belief that “Performance” is the sole driver of advancement. However, the PIE Model (Performance, Image, Exposure) suggests that Performance only accounts for about 10% of career success at the executive level. The remaining 90% is split between Image (what people think of you) and Exposure (who knows what you do).

A January reset is the time to stop “proving” your worth through over-performance and start “positioning” your influence. This means being more selective about visibility. Are you visible for being “helpful,” or are you visible for being “strategic”? Strategic leaders use the start of the year to realign their personal brand with the high-impact outcomes they want to be known for.

4. Create Certainty Through Strategic Choice

In an unstable market, the temptation is to wait for more data before making a move. However, decisive leadership is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Research into “mental workload” and cognitive load suggests that “decision fatigue” is one of the primary drivers of executive burnout.

By making high-level “rules” for yourself in January – deciding what you will not do, what you will not attend, and what you will not tolerate – you reduce the number of micro-decisions you have to make later. This creates an environment of certainty for your team. When the leader is grounded in their choices, the organization follows suit.

How to Move Ahead

The “Executive Reset” is a declaration of intent. It is the moment you stop being led by your schedule and start acting as the architect of your career.

As you face this month, remember: Direction is more important than speed. You are not behind. You are exactly where you need to be to decide what comes next.
